See also the Linus Router Project (www.lrp.org, iirc), which (again iirc)
gives you a router and firewall on a diskless 386 (it loads f5rom a
floppy).  I don't know if it includes pppd though.  Alternately you
could put a small disk in that 386 and run OpenBSD on it.
