The DEC 8400 never existed?  It may have been a nickname
for the Alphaserver 8400 (esp. if upgraded from the DEC7000),
but the name has always been Alphaserver 8400.

The OS has to be able to honor the configuration tree.  Otherwise,
bad things can happen.
