I've been talking some with an emeritus professor of physics at Lock
Haven University, PA. (Talking about things from failed perpetual
motion machines and why they don't work, to antique hardware hacks, to
the shortcomings of winmodems, to ...)
Anyway, while he denies knowing much about computers, he turns out to be
something of an old-time hacker. He has a early-'80s-vintage Sanyo PC,
with the triple-stack memory hack that required physically modifying the
motherboard (which he and one of his grad students did based on
instructions dictated over the phone), and the Sanyo/IBM dual-display
hack, and the OS hand-patch to run MS-DOS executables (which he and
another of his grad students figured out between them). He was asking
if anyone on the list is interested in preserving it.
Anyone want a piece of history that didn't make it? If so, drop me a
note and I'll put you in contact.
