I've seen MIPS, I've seen PowerPC, and I've even seen SPARC raid
controllers.   I've never seen one that was a 186.  Not saying they
don't exist, just that I doubt that is going to be common on surplus
equipment these days.

Myself, I'm watching this iSCSI stuff.  A cheap PPC machine doing
software raid over cheap IDE disks and serving over multiple gige links
would be fairly nice.  Especially if the drives are hot swappable.
