You're confusing CDDA at 176.4KBytes/second with MP3 at 256 Kbits/second. :)

Well, I convert to MP3 using variable bitrate from 64k to 320k, with
LAME instructed to prefer quality over filesize.  That results in
approximately a 5MB MP3 for 4 minutes of digital audio that sounds, to
my ear, indistinguishable from the original CD.  The corresponding
.WAV/CDDA file is approximately a full order of magnitude larger.  I
typically get a 7MB .mp3 from a 50MB .wav file.
