   That's an OS thing, not a hardware or architectural thing.  You're 
probably thinking of Ultrix on VAX, which didn't (if memory serves) 
support shared libraries.  There's nothing about the VAX architecture, 
or any implementation of that architecture, that prevents the 
implementation of shared libraries.

   NetBSD/vax, for example, got shared libraries upwards of five years 
ago.
