   Well it wasn't really a matter of "that kind of need".  There were 
several BIG computers which used ESDI drives...mini/mainframe class, 
far larger than even the big Sun3s which also used ESDI.  These 
machines would have been very expensive and/or painful to design new 
controllers for.
