The trick I mentioned is how you format/label an unformatted/unlabeled drive when building a Sun box - start the install, get to the GUI, open a terminal session, run "format," do what you need to do, then close the window and continue on...

This is also how you get an /etc/defaultroute setting in Solaris < 9...
