Yes. I threw a generic PeeCee Symbios 53C875 based card in my Sun U5 and 
I can boot from it. An Alpha didn't like that card. Somtimes the firmware
is picky about the chipset revision. Similar for PReP / CHRP RS/6000 PPC
machines.
