I meant to say that Sun -recommends- that you take the filesystem
offline, but it's not terribly difficult to ensure that you can do an
online backup.

So, uhm, why are you asking us?  Do whatever makes the suits happy.

The same reason that Crays exist.  Some people need them.

A number would be useless.  "low load" means that the chances are
sufficiently low that a file spanning multiple inodes will be changed
during the period of time that ufsdump is copying its inode chain to
output.
