Civil employees and teachers are unionized here as well, but they
*were* mistreated for a long time, but the unions have been in place so
long we forget...

I have a friend that worked for the state of Pennsylvania, in their
Liquor Control Board - he was forced into the union (if he wanted to
work as a programmer), but because he was viewed as "nearly
management," he was precluded from voting in union elections/matters...

Of course, they still took their "union fee" right out of his paycheck
just the same... ;^) It is anecdotal stories like this that make me
question the value of a "professional" union. I think teachers (as a
profession) suffer for being part of the union, though I concede that
it probably is needed to ensure some level of sanity in the public
education system (local school boards can not be trusted to "do the
right thing" I suspect)...
