LED lights don't have enough penetration to be used as headlines.

Even with focusing lenses, they still don't really do the job that an
incandescent does.

Of course, LEDs are improving continuously.

Keep in mind that things like wall-warts are notoriously inefficient.
Efficient units cost more, and most device makers are looking to cut
corners for the mass market.

Other converters aren't quite as bad.

What kind of solution would you use if you wanted to have a significant
DC source system in a house?

Would it be more efficient to distribute something like 48VDC through a
room/house, than to just use local conversion?
