The two big problems are that the 1400 is a NUBUS type macintosh, so the
latest PPC distributions don't include kernels for it and it maxes out
at 64m of ram.
If you get the correct kernel, have a big enough hard disk and choose your
GUI carefuly, it will run fine.
The other gotcha is the card slots are 5 volt PCMCIA (16 bit) not 3.3
volt 32 bit CARDBUS.
Another posibility would be to get a kernel for the Ubuntu linux live CD
you would load the kernel from a MacOS partition and then run off of the
CD. Not exactly a battery saver, but you would not need the 2-3 gig of
space YellowDog requires.
