[rescue] argh! serial port help needed for Cisco 2924

Any suggestions for help with this will be most appreciated...

I have a Netra with LOM port, over serial, running into Ultra 5 9-pin serial 
( /dev/term/b ).  It works perfectly.

I turn off the Netra, plug the exact same cable into a recently rescued Cisco 2924 switch (WS-C2924M-XL-EN).  

All I get on plugging the Cisco in is "~" .  Settings are of course, 9600 8N1 , same as for the LOM.
