Perhaps part of it is that it's so trivial to add that "little
hardware" yourself?  Two ICL232s, some caps, and a 7404, and you have
yourself two more serial ports (TXD/RXD only, but that's enough for
lots of applications).  (Cf. NetBSD/sun3 config file FOUR_TTYS....)
