The DS had "usual" hydraulic disc brakes. The pressure to operate them
was taken from the hydropneumatic suspension. That in turn was pressured
by a hydraulic pump driven by the main engine. The break button was
basicly a linear hydraulic velve between the main hydraulic supply and
the breaks. The deeper / harder you pressed the break button the more
hydraulic pressure was applied to the break.

Usual breaks had a pedal that drove a hydraulic cylinder. This cylinder
generated the pressure to operate the hydraulic disc brakes. Thus the
driver had to deliver all energy to operate the breakes. In the DS the
driver needed only the very samll force to operate the valve, the
hydraulic system supplied the energy.

Obvious problem: If the main engine stoped you lost all hydraulic
pressure and thus no breaks. But this was no real problem. The
hydropneumatic suspension stored enough pressure to operate the breaks.
