U5 has CMD 646 IDE - UDMA-33 and works but obviously is not a speed
demon. Anyway, most not very recent ide disks do not cross the 33 MB/s
boundary anyway so this us often not the bottleneck. I'm running my U5
with a 120G WD and would probably have it faster with some more decent
IDE interface but again even this is not the bottleneck for me (CPU
speed and RAM size of 320M are). YMMV.
Blade 100 has ALi chipset along with ALi M5229 IDE (UDMA-66). I had one
as a desktop several years ago, running with both Solaris 8 and Linux
2.4. It could use DMA fine back then with both Solaris AND Linux and I
did not notice any data corruption in a year. So maybe there are
different hardware revisions or the Linux driver has become more
agressive later.
