uh, might you have an Ultra 1?   the drive slots stack in the U1 and
you can fit the half-high drive in the lower position (even still put
a 1" drive in the top slot as well though it doesn't leave much room
between the drives for ventilation).

in the U2, the drives sit side-by-side and the metal openings in the
chassis limit you to 1" drives (the cdrom and floppy go above the
drive and there is a metal sheld part of the chassis that would require
some major cutting away to fit half-high drives, but one willing to
chop away could make half-high drives fit and not have the cdrom/floppy
bracket in place).
