The University allows (and pays for the privilege) graduate and even
occasionally undergraduate engineering students to install all sorts
of software on their personal machines, including some really nice cad
and schematic stuff.   They have to un-install it when they leave the
University and return the license.

The PC copies get snatched up fast, and the "other" versions sit on
the shelf.  Another good reason to get "other" than wintel hardware.

Also, the more money he spends on hardware, the less he has left for
software.  Plenty of software out there for free as well, though the
quality is spotty and you need to be careful to get the tools you need.

And the "fan boy" comment was just rude.  A large number of
engineering shops are using Sun hardware, will continue to use these
"outdated" machines for the foreseeable future since it just works and
keeps on working; some of it (a LOT of it) is legacy stuff.  This is
ESPECIALLY true in Nigeria and other non-U.S. and non-western-European
countries, by the way.  If he's familiar with other things than just
PeeCee, it helps in the long and short run.
