I will defer to your knowledge of such things, but I myself, feel very 
comfortable with software RAID, especially on newer stuff like SATA 
RAID.  It means that the OS itself will be able to read the data in the 
event the controller fails.

Then again, I would be using ZFS RAID-Z in my hypothetical setup :-)

Having a hot spare is always a good idea IMHO.  Sometimes 2 drives can 
fail at once, or before you notice the first has failed.  Sometimes you 
want to wait until something has completed (or until the weekend) to 
swap out a failed drive.
