I remember when IRIX switched from X layered over GL to GL layered over
X.  I had a GL game which ran well before the switch, but, after the
switch, something in the GL-emulation timer code weirded out and the
game's timing oscillated at about 0.4Hz, rendering it unplayable.
(These days, I play it on SPARCs with cg6s, using the cg6's line-draw
support to speed things up to playable frame rates - it was/is a
fundamentally vector game, a revisiting of the asteroids genre.)
