No, he wrote it as a class project for a techwriting class. He offered
it to the author of the program (then shareware) to distrubte with the
program if he wanted to for free.
It was a PDF file to be distributed unmodified.
The deal never went through, he sent it to the program's author who
never bothered to get a license. With the manual the program became a
hit and the author sold it to another company.
The other company later asked for the source files for the manual. My friend
told them that they did not own the manual, he did, and that they only
had a license to distribute it unmodified. They did not have a license
to modify it at all.
He offered to sell them a license for two months (Israel) pay (about a week's
for a techwriter in Silicon Valley) and the guy called him an asshole
and blocked his emails.
The company then went on to have it translated into other languanges and
with a "books on demand" company published it in paper.
