It's been an issue since the A31p - given that the cooling wasn't always
up to the task(and sometimes given the wrong part). It's one thing that
was a part of having one of those was to know that it would be hot. It's
more about the cooling not usually being up to the task. A thin frame
and a hot GPU will mean there will be problems, but good cooling should
keep it running for a long while.
I've lived through that on an A31p, a T42p - and if I can find one, go
through with it on a T60p (as it may still have the overheating issues,
but doesn't have the nonstandard thinness of the T40-T43 series). Unless
there is a laptop that is made by someone with comparable
reputation(service/tech support) as IBM, has IPS(or something
long-lasting that beats it in quality, not price), and the same build
quality, then the overheating is worth it(for the rare times it does
happen).
It simply is that good - and it is so far the only possible option for a
(non-ignorable) quantity of us out there. It's sort of how the 600
series was with the battery charging issue - there was too much that was
done right that outweighs what they did wrong.
