Iron Systems has (or had at one time) some "shallow" 1U boxes that let you
mount two of them back-to-back in a standard-depth rack.

They make decent stuff - I maintain a couple of systems for a friend that
he bought from them in 2003 or 2004 (P4 1.8Ghz boxes) and the only problem
we've had with them is the CPU fans died after three years and had to be
replaced. They withstood it like a champ though - all they did was
overheat and reboot repeatedly; once the fans were swapped out it's been
fine.
