Drives are normally set to the second position, yes.  However, I'm not 
using a twisted cable.  The twist in the cable changes the signal seen 
by the computer to a first position jumper setting.

No the light isn't always on..... the motor runs when it shouldn't and 
doesn't when it should.  XP also gives me an I/O error when trying to 
access it.
