Just to clarify, I ran 'x3270 -model 3278-2 &' at the terminal and it
opened in a X window. Select 'Connect' -> 'Other' from the menu bar and
type 'localhost 3270' into the field. (The '&' just detaches it from the
terminal session).

I will be using x3270, as linked by MrBill. I loaded it on Ubuntu from
the package repo and used it and it's a pretty sound piece of work from
what little I've used it.
