What about those wall-wart servers? I forget the name, but there were  
Apple Airport Express-looking servers that hung off a 120v power plug  
and had USB & Ethernet (maybe WiFi also), selling in the $100-150  
range...

Really depends on the application, though. Old laptops might be best  
(thinking of fellow that made kiosks out of old Sparcbook 3gx)...
