As you already wrote, a memory test program is a good start to check
the hardware. Maybe e few cores are falen apart and need to be
replaced. ;-)
According to http://www.village.org/pdp11/faq the 11/20 maxes out at
24 kB core. So you will be limited to UNIX V[1-7].
Then get a serial console interface and a disk controler. If you wane
run UNIX most likely you need a RK11-D or somthing that emulates this.
