WinXP and Win7 equally suck on a single-core 512M box.
I occasionally have to work on such boxes (once/twice a year) running XP, and
it's no fun. Two Gigs was the sweet-spot for WinXP (32-bit), and it's very
reasonable for Win7.
At work we have a bunch if Dell GX270s with single-core (but hyper-threading)
Pentium 4 CPUs, 2 Gig RAM, IDE HD, and integrated Intel graphics and Win7 is
preferable to WinXP on those desktops.
