  [you meant vector displays, as indicated in your subsequent email]

  This is because the ones you're thinking of were driven by digital
systems via a D/A converter.  So, discrete steps.  Moving the electron
beam isn't the limitation...electrons have very little mass; it's
trivial to move an electron beam VERY VERY QUICKLY.  Look at super-fast
analog oscilloscopes like the Tektronix 7104.
