yes, my thinking exactly. Not knowing the pedigree of the machine, I'd
approach it as a restoration project.
Remove everything, through cleaning.
I rely on cleaning contacts on boards/connectors/switches with a product
called Deoxit. IMHO, simply the best.

I little mechanical effort on accessible contacts (e.g. red ruby eraser and
alcohol) + deoxit contact preserver works wonders as well.
Spray inaccessable places.
If you are really brave....
In the bad old days when we made our own boards, after the wave solder
machine, put the boards in a dishwasher, some special detergent (which I
can't remember the name but we have used regular liquid for dishwashing
machines on occason). Did a short wash cycle and regulated the dryer temp
to 120 degrees (yea we modified the washer)...or air dried them...then
again, we were making low volume boards....
Unless you have a real need to do this on vintage stuff, I wouldnt...
