Can't take credit for this, archived note from Lionel.
Also, not sure how long a paper mouse pad will last, but this ought to work for
troubleshooting purposes, to determine between Sun optical mouse vs mouse pad.
I suppose if it (paper mouse pad) works, but quickly wears out, it will be
pretty quick/cheap/easy to print out as many new ones as you need.

There was a postscript file (or was it PDF?) that allowed you to print a
mousepad - the ruled page worked as well as the reflective metal pad as I
recall...
