suffering from the inner-platform effect.

Emacs is a dramatic failure on the user-experience front unless the user's
workflow involves spinning it up and spending all day in there with a
multitude of tools that mutually benefit from all that Emacs substrate.
As a transitory tool, though, it's just awful.

That said, if one can achieve that sort of working environment, it's a
pretty good one.  It's far more capable and agile than any commercial IDE
I've seen.  Compare that to the V93000 engineering platform at $dayjob
which means I get to live in Eclipse all day--an extra-cruddy and ancient
Eclipse with a metric ton of Agilent^WVerigy^WAdvantest trogoldyte-ware
welded onto the side of it.

So, I mean, things can always be worse.  Hoo-ray for ridiculously complex,
infinitely programmable environments for doing fundamentally simple
things.  Neither Vim not Emacs is awful in a world of crapware based on
Electron, NetBeans, and Eclipse.
