That's pretty much it, unless re-using an existing mode...

It may or may not, it depends on how the display is trying to sync to
the signal.
Older multisync CRT could be very tolerant, as they had to deal with a lot of
different input from different vendors, and they were analog-to-analog
anyway.
It was particularly true for third-party manufacturers trying to sell
to big-name
customers - Apple or Sun or HP had mostly fixed-freq CRTs back then...
Iiyama could only sell by accepting to hook up to anything...

Modern LCDs tend to prefer to stick to the standard, and won't try very hard
to give you a picture... if they even have an analog input.
