Is there a reason you couldn't do the update overnight, rather than during
work hours? The latest release of Windows allows for patch deferral that used
to require a complex corporate environment to support, and honestly major
updates like you describe (multi-hour) installs are relatively rare.

I suspect your 6 hour update was actually an OS upgrade - you can safely use
your machine during a update in almost every case I'm aware of.
