I think this is not actually true. I wrote a driver for NetBSD 1.4T
that successfully drove an lpvi/SPARCprinter for me; I see no reason it
wouldn't work for someone else.
Of course, you may _prefer_ to run SunOS or Solaris; as I think someone
recently pointed out, except for very unusual special cases, this is
not particularly useful as a "just put this on paper" tool, so anyone
trying to make it work probably has some reason for doing so beyond
just having a working printer (I know I sure did back when I made mine
work). And that reason may also lead to wanting to run an original OS
on the host, too.
But if it's just about the hardware, well, with my driver and suitable
NetBSD you should be able to print any page bitmap you can generate.
