Such applications have always been broken; X has never promised the
existence of a PseudoColor visual (or any other specific visual type,
for that matter - and, indeed, back in the day there were lots of
server/machine setups that provided only depth-1 StaticGray because
that's all the hardware supported).

(That's not to say broken clients don't exist.  I've seen depressing
levels of brokenness in X programs of various sorts.  I even saw one
once that used TrueColor/DirectColor but couldn't be bothered to use
the RGB masks provided by the visual; it blindly used compiled-in
masks, masks that presumably matched its developer's server.)
