Thanks very much for the above. I must admit some scepticism re: the new
chip. It doesn't look like a new one to me, but as Jonathan says, it could
be anything and the fact it got hot is of course a bad sign. I did remove
all cards but the video card on several attempts - I can try also
removing that and going down to just serial, thanks. One thing I have
noticed which is potentially scary is that the power LED is now no longer
lit. I have checked the power supply and it is delivering both 12v and 5v
to the motherboard so I'm reasonably certain that isn't at fault.
I am now in the process of letting it sit while powered up for a while,
as Mark suggested, to see if it will go through that and come out of the
other side... fingers crossed, but now slightly more optimistic that Mark's
backwards insertion didn't actually kill the mobo. I'll report back
shortly...
