I ran S2.4 thru 2.6 in production (commercially) on an SS1000E for several years: From hard experience, either Solaris 2.4, 2.5, 2.5.1 or 2.6 will do well on the SS1000 and SS1000E. S7 and S8 tend to require more single-threaded grunt than eg 60MHz SuperSPARCs can provide (the super-rare 90MHz SS CPUs would cope better, but that's a pipe-dream). Note that if running modules faster than 60MHz and the system was manufactured prior to July 1995, you may want the replacement side-panels with wider vents.

Beware that the SS1000(E) is fussy regarding which CPU modules were officially compatible or even work at all: see
http://mbus.sunhelp.org/systems/sun/ss1000.htm

S2.5.1 and S2.6 had (has! I'm still using it on other systems) better multi-processor and multi-threading capabilities than prior, although you'd probably only notice it under load. Whichever you use, you'll want to get your hands on the latest (final) Recommended Patch Cluster for that version of Solaris. If you need them, drop me a line.
