I've seen serial TTL levels be either 3.3V or 5.0V.
Are you matching your TTL voltage levels correctly with your RS232 adapter?
I have an RS232 adapter that jumpers for 3 settings, it even does 1.8V TTL,
but I don't know what equipment that works with. I do have some gear that
does 5V TTL, and some that are 3.3V TTL, so the jumpering comes in handy.
It sounds a bit like like an undervoltage threshold garbage.
