I got uneasy about this. A bit of digging with my work "smart"phone
turned up enough info that I managed to get it to boot, though I had to
pull the battery to do so - turns out there was a MacOS install of some
sort on the disk.

But it also turns out that MacOS install had data which wasn't mine and
which I'm not comfortable releasing, such as a bunch of email addresses
and IP configuration - it was set up as a mailhost, auto-starting an
SMTP-and-IMAP server of some sort, and there were logs full of email
addresses and such.

So I've wiped the drive. But, on the plus side, the machine is now
known to work when given a MacOS install on the disk - or, to be fully
precise, known to have worked when it was last given such an install.

Incidentally, the battery was extremely dead. It was driving about
12mV according to a high-impedance multimeter (after removing it from
the machine), and not only that, the polarity of that 12mV was
backwards from the battery's nominal polarity. I have not replaced it.
I have nothing suitable to replace it with and the machine appears
willing to boot under at least some circusmtances without it.
