Because it is designed to support HDCP.  I am willing to pay a small
amount to exert what little pressure I can against that.

That's another reason I don't like it - much the same reason I dislike
USB as compared to serial or parallel: it requires _way_ too much
complexity on "the other end".

I've handled serial-port receive with discrete transistors and SSI
logic (a 74123 one-shot).  I was using only one bit of each byte on the
wire, but it worked.  I haven't done it with just discretes, but I
probably could if I cared to bother.

I doubt I could do as much with USB without either completely
designed-for-USB silicon or a full CPU, or at least an FPGA.
_Ethernet_ (10Mb Ethernet at least) is simpler than that.

However, none of this is of critical importance to me.  I said "a small
amount" for a reason; it's not worth a large amount to me.
