[rescue] Baffling boot message on a sparcstation 1

Ibve been trying on and off for the past year to get a sparcsation 1 running
again.

I finally (after replacing the CPU) have the board bbootingb slightly. It
shows the header message, but stops soon after with

0 bad serr reg0 bad serr reg1 bad serr reg2 b&. etc

I can STOP-A and get to a boot prompt, but obv. something amiss with the error
message.
