"Based on" might be a bit of a stretch; pretty sure they were written
in different languages (PL/S and C if I recall my dad's complaints
about C properly). But in some/many cases the same programmers worked
on GDDM and PM, so "influenced" is more than likely. 

Not that I really know about either - I'm the black sheep of the family
having been seduced by Unix; my brother works with current IBM
mainframes and as previously mentioned my dad was an IBMer.
