Hello. I have been on the sidelines of this list for 20+
years and have enjoyed seeing what a nice community you have.
I was deep into SunOS and Solaris in the years surrounding
2000 at Exodus Communications, till its demise.

I feel a bit bad poking my head up when I am seeking
something. I have had an old Sun Sparc 10 running since the
mid 90's and except for replacing the power supply fans a
couple times after noticing a bad smells emanating, it has
been unbelievably reliable especially after some severe
overheat events.

I realized for a few years that the battery in the Dallas
RTC would be dead, but this machine was running continuously
all this time and I knew it was one power failure away form
being bricked.  I had been keeping this system up all these
years for fun. (In 1983 I put together a multi user chat BBS
on a PC clone, which was rewritten to run on a Solbourne,
then moved it from SunOS to Solaris on the Sparc 10.

Although it is outdated, there is still a loyal core that
like to log in and find old friends of yesteryear that also
may be there. Sometimes a critical mass occurs and people
are on for hours, catching up.

I would like to keep it going by securing, somehow, an
unused Sparc10 with a happy more recent Dallas chip to keep
it going by just moving my HDD to the new box.

I don't have much to trade anymore, but I am happy to trade
an original stand alone DecTalk. (In the modem days I was
putting together a way for users to dial in and have the
DecTalk read the users email to them)

Any thoughts?  I am in the SF Bay Area.  Thanks and pleased
to meet you all and Happy New Year as well !

Bob Klein
