I remember learning that in X windows the server/client are the reverse of what we traditionally think of... the box in the server room is the "client" and the box on your desktop is the "server". The logic behind this is the box on your desktop is "serving up" the session to the end user. I may be wrong, I haven't spoken or even thought about this in any meaningful way for the past decade...
The issue would be that it is more efficient to to send a character string to a x terminal, than to send a bit map of each character in the text string to the x terminal. Your x windows session 'should' be fed a *description* of what to display, not a bitmap *vidro stream* of what to display, the latter uses much, much more bandwidth.
