Well, the second half of your first sentence is still true: *properly
written* X programs can run nearly as well over the network as locally.
It's just that people have stopped writing X programs properly, at
least for that value of "properly". Presumably, in their authors'
opinions, over-the-net functionality is less important than things like
antialiasing, even with display resolution increasing, making things
like antialiasing less important.
But non-"modern" (ie, not that sloppily written) X programs still work
as well as they ever did. I routinely use my X clients displaying on a
"modern" X server over the network.
