Speaking personally:

Why?  Because IRIX is closed source.

Of course, the hardware analog (undocumented hardware) would make me
prefer an opener machine than an SGI to begin with.  I have used
machines with undocumented hardware - but I prefer to ignore the
undocumented hardware rather than use closed software to access it.
