Just how often are things being disconnected and re-connected?

How many mating cycles are the components rated for.  I'd expect four or 
more digits.

Last I looked 10Base5 had terminators too.

Didn't 10Base5 also have N connectors to screw onto taps in the event 
that vampire taps weren't used?

How is this people problem substantively different for 10Base2 from 10Base5?

I supported some 10Base2, but not much of it.  I think the biggest 
problem was more with shoddy installation and abuse of the components. 
(Smashing cables, etc.)
