How about the ability to present files off a FAT32 volume as a CD-ROM, or behaving as a specific model SCSI-attached Ethernet controller with an integrated 802.11 bridge *and* a Macintosh control panel to talk through the device and control the 802.11 SSID settings?
Agree that things like the ACB4000, MD21, or ACARD SCSI -> IDE [-> SATA] are not "emulators," but I think some of the extended features on modern widgets pushes them toward "might be called an emulator."
